Rockford IL is the largest city in Illinois outside of the Chicago metropolitan area. Despite being a large city, Rockford has over 20,000 acres of green space and four rivers. It is known as the city of gardens, and for good reason. It is the perfect place to get outside and enjoy nature.

Rock Cut State Park 

Rock Cut State Park is 3,092 acres, which includes two lakes (Pierce Lake and Olson Lake). The park is the perfect place to go fishing, hiking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing or wildlife watching. They offer seasonal hunting programs and have 270 premium campsites. The park is home to wildlife such as waterfowls, deers, foxes, muskrats, woodchucks, beavers, opossums, raccoons, and gray and fox squirrels. 

Sinnissippi Park 

Sinnissippi is one of Rockford’s oldest parks. It is a Historical National Site as it is the site of the Hopefwillian Indian Mounds. It has a number of amenities, including ball diamonds, cross-country skiing trails, fishing, grills, picnic areas, playground equipment, open play areas, restrooms, shelters and trail access. 

Atwood Park 

Atwood park offers a number of free programs to the public. They have self-guided hikes, feed times for Birds of Prey, and have a Center with animal inhabitants. 

Lockwood Park

Lockwood park is an equestrian center and children’s farm. It is home to a variety of animals including horses, goats, sheep, llama, rabbits, ducks, and a donkey. There are over 146 acres to explore via hiking, biking or horseback riding. 

Espenschield Memorial Forest Preserve 

Espenschield Memorial Forest Preserve is 114.7 acres of mature bur oaks and woodlands. It is a great place to go mountain biking, hiking or canoeing. You can also enjoy the shelter house and picnic areas.
